First, I started off by creating some hand sketches of the different frames and movements for the video. Looking back, it’s really easy to underestimate time, and with the 30-second limit that we were working with, I realized that I couldn't include everything in the video as I had originally planned.
My second step was seeking inspiration. I aimed for a dark, mysterious theme that was quite bold and was also inspired by the saber effect. I chose a song that I believed matched the theme and had a clear beat that I could work with.
I decided to challenge myself by creating and animating my own avatar character. So, I opened up Illustrator and began working on some illustrations. I came up with a fun idea to pay homage to Gothenburg in my video by illustrating the typical trams as well.
Lastly, it was time to start working in After Effects. It was certainly challenging and very time-consuming to rig the skeleton of my character and animate it, as I had never done it before. However, I found the process to be really enjoyable! After this, I gathered all the content I wanted in my showreel and worked on syncing it with the music and timing all the elements. I also added and created my own sound effects.
If I were to revisit this project, I would make a few changes and create an ending that matches the beginning more closely, such as having the tram return and saying "you have reached your final destination" or something similar. Overall, I found this to be a fun project.
